Aviation in Alaska--what would the Great land be without the airplane?

It is impossible to overstate the contribution of aviation to the history, economy, and people of Alaska. However, as technology changes, so does the Alaska aviation industry. Anchorage used to be the literal air crossroads of the world--before the 747SP and the breakup of the former Soviet Union, that is. Now, Anchorage and Fairbanks concentrate on attracting air cargo companies. Shorter routes over the Arctic ice cap to Europe across the new Russian Republic to Asia and Europe have all but eliminated Alaska's place in the international passenger market. The skies above Anchorage used to see 747's and DC-10's in such numbers that air quality and noise complaints became common from those pseudo-Alaskans who believe others should do as they say, regardless of the reality or common sense aspect of the situation.

--Alaska's premier airline, although headquartered in Seattle, Alaska Airlines plays a major role in Alaska's passenger and cargo market.
